Between 1965 and 1978, the Maryland General Assembly authorized funding of $1,000,000 for land acquisition and site improvements including beach erosion control measures and construction of camping and picnicking facilities. Along with a tour and tasting, we met one of the co-owners. Reservations can be made through the park office.There is a boat ramp as well as 25 boat slips available to campers for a minimal fee. By 1870, blacks had other sources of income. William Ellis McLeod sold an option for land to the Country Club of Charleston in 1922 and the golf course was built by 1926. He served six years in the United States Army and was honorably discharged as a sergeant E-6. William Paca is buried in the family cemetery there, and as it is a private residence, we just do a drive by photo and admire the serene beauty of Wye Island.We head north to the Wye Mill, which is in Talbot County, but actually half of the mill is in Queen Anne’s County. The first colonists to Maryland arrive at St. Clement’s Island on Maryland’s western shore and found the settlement of St. Mary’s.. Clark, although some of the freedmen were accommodated if their claims were proven valid.The Freedmen’s Bureau controlled McLeod Plantation and used it as a regional office and Provost court. By 1880, there were 2,500 black residents on the island and 2,600 white.The white planters faced additional obstacles after the war: several of the older generation had died, and the younger generation did not have the experience in planting their ancestors had.
