However, no matter how the show grows, they are most looking forward to sharing more science with listeners. For their launch this morning, the Perseverance team stayed home to keep each other safe during the present pandemic, and they watched the launch from many hundreds of individual screens. “I think one of my favorite parts of science is the little things that explain the day-to-day questions about how things work,” Ashley said, and answering those questions for their listeners is a lot of fun. I was lucky enough to witness that launch in from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida with the Mars Science Laboratory team – I was just a graduate student at the time. Yes, I am a little bit lazy, but mostly I just want you to understand what it is like to listen to someone fit an immense amount of information in a tiny amount of time.
Fittingly, every team played a role in planning the five sols that will accomplish the work necessary to attempt drilling next week. Search Britannica Not in the figurative sense—Curiosity’s 10 instruments all still work well, its six wheels are all doing well, and the drill has been working great for the last two years as well as earlier in the mission. After the long drive, we will have untargeted ChemCam observations of two additional targets, a DAN active measurement, and Navcam will look for clouds and dust devils. Email Morgan (morgan@podchaser.com) to tell her why your favorite show should be featured next. Planetary Geologist; University of Tennessee; Knoxville, TN Combinations of Navcam and Mastcam will monitor the amount of dust in the atmosphere early in the morning, around midday, and later in the afternoon; Navcam will also look for dust devils around midday and clouds early in the morning. I would love to just let you guys listen to the interviews I conducted for this piece rather than writing about them. The third day’s science block will include a series of ChemCam LIBS laser ablation measurements of different rock targets, including the Breamish target, a slanted platy rock named “Harthope,” and an effort to acquire evidence for chemical trends with depth on the target named “Back Bay.” Finally, the next morning, Curiosity will acquire some early morning environmental images to look for clouds and to measure the atmospheric dust content. Planetary Geologist; University of New Brunswick; Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada Front Hazard camera image of the Sol 2816 workspace. RAD, REMS, and DAN will continue taking data.
Curiosity has arrived near her next drill location and will spend the weekend analyzing a series of interesting targets in our workspace.
Our weekend observations of the target Breamish showed some interesting chemistry results , so the plan on Sol 2829 starts off with some follow up observations: Mastcam will take a multispectral image of Breamish, and ChemCam will analyze it a second time. Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech.
As it happens, we are due for a new set of wheel images, so today’s “drive” is a bit unique: the rover will only travel a little over a meter, just enough to image one full rotation of the wheels. Before this unusually short drive, the rover will acquire data on the local geology; bedrock targets “Cateran Trail” and “Cowal Way” will be targeted with the ChemCam instrument and imaged with Mastcam for documentation purposes.
The drive today should take Curiosity a little to the north and east, towards our first planned stop on our summer road-trip to the sulfate-bearing unit.
