But while they may argue and whine endlessly at first, our cast of main girls soon discovers that there is more than competition in themselves; that there's enough room there for a friend or two, or ten. I listened quietly. Stir in equal parts Bollywood, Boy Bands, Pirates, An Evil Corporation, Crappy Parenting, Reality TV, Miss Teen USA pageants, and commercials aimed at teens.
Jealous, competitive, vindictive: that's how some of the girls start out, having internalized the misogyny and male gaze of the Corporation, the analogue to today's pop culture media. [because my reading of the movie is less like "this is what happens when you overwork yourself into exhaustion in your quest to be the best, and the bad dark impulses get in" and more like "this is what happens when you are told that in order to be acceptable, you have to go against all your natural inclinations and you end up a triumphant bloody corpse because grrrrl power and abdominal bleeds make you succeed, but to subsume your own personality is, ultimately, death.
