Batman The Escape was a stand-up, steel roller coaster by Intamin that has been relocated several times. Batman: The Dark Knight (formerly Batman: The Ride) is a steel floorless roller coaster designed by Bolliger & Mabillard located in the Gotham City section of Six Flags New England.

It started at Six Flags Magic Mountain under the name'Shockwave', opening in 1986. While at AstroWorld, the roller coaster was based on Gotham City. Batman The Escape debuted at Six Flags Magic Mountain in 1984, but called Astroworld home from 1993 to 2005. Shockwave had a press preview on April 20, 1990 and opened to the public the following day. The roller coaster opened at Six Flags AstroWorld on April 24, 1993. Two years later, it was relocated to Six Flags Great Adventure, where it went by the same name. It was painted blue with white supports. When the Batman The Escape was originally erected at Six Flags AstroWorld, it was repainted white. This was the second or third Batman/DC coaster to open at a Six Flags park, and the first not to be called Batman: The Ride. It was painted entirely white and called Batman The Escape. Batman: The Dark Knight was announced to the public on February 6, 2002, though construction had started in September 2001.Riders enter a plaza with an arched entrance, where they see the Batman logo covering the ground with Gotham theming. When attendance is high, an extra switchback section is used. It was later painted yellow with black supports.
